Tips For Setting Up a Homework Routine

By India Foster, Communications Strategist, School Mental Health Initiative, New England Mental Health Technology Transfer Center

Getting into a routine and establishing a consistent homework schedule is crucial for student success. Still, it cannot be accessible when getting back into the flow of the school year. Creating a solid homework routine helps with learning, reduces stress, and helps students develop time management skills. Whether you're a teacher or a parent, these tips will help you create a routine that promotes productivity and balance.

Create a Dedicated Homework Space

A dedicated space to do homework is the first step in creating success. Making the place a quiet, organized area free from distractions is ideal for focusing on assignments and anything school-related. Whether it's a desk in a bedroom, a corner of the living room, or a study nook, having a consistent place for homework can help students mentally transition from playtime to study time. This space should have all necessary supplies, be away from devices, and be clutter-free.

Have Consistency

Consistency is critical to building a productive homework routine. Establishing a regular time each day for homework helps students develop a habit, making it easier to stay on top of assignments. Consider your child's or student's daily schedule and set a time that works best, whether it's right after school, after a snack, or after extracurricular activities.

Encourage Independence but Offer Support

While it's essential for students to develop independence in managing their homework, they may still need guidance occasionally. Please encourage students to try solving problems independently first but be available to offer help when needed. This balance helps build confidence and problem-solving skills.

As a teacher or a parent, your role in establishing a consistent homework routine is pivotal. By creating a dedicated workspace, setting a regular schedule, and encouraging independence while minimizing distractions, you are helping students develop effective study habits that lead to academic success. Remember, the goal is not just to complete assignments but to build skills that will serve students well throughout their education and beyond. Your guidance and support are invaluable in this journey.
